The Daoyin Qigong system was developed at the Beijing University of Physical Education by Professor Zhang Guangde. Professor Guangde developed Daoyin over a period of 30 years, synthesizing the system from many older sets of Qigong and Chinese exercises. It is designed as not only a preventative against sickness and aging, but also to cure chronic and acute illnesses as well.
After suffering through a period of ill health Professor Guangde made an investigation into many types of Qigong and longevity theories. He already possessed a document entitled 'Exercises for Chronic Diseases' given to him by his grandfather and from this knowledge, combined with his experience of traditional Chinese medicine, he created the Daoyin system, incorporating hundreds of different exercises into several sets designed to promote health in every major organ in the body. It is claimed that by practicing Daoyin he cured himself of his illness.
Daoyin includes many sets of exercises for general health and for specific illnesses such as arthritis. It has warm-up routines and sets for martial artists, as well as updating older routines such as the Eight Pieces of Brocade. It can be practiced anywhere and at any time, and is open to anyone regardless of age. Today it is estimated up to four million people worldwide practice the Daoyin system for better health and an improved quality of life.
