Appealing Guizhou

Guizhou, situated in the northeast of Yungui Plateau in the southwest of China, is a province within the middle sub-tropical zone. There are 49 ethnic groups with 48 ethnic minorities living in Guizhou, which is also famous for its unique geographical landforms.

Reasons to visit:
Guizhou attracts many tourists with its gorgeous scenery, rich ethnic traditions, marvelous culture and history and balmy climate. Over 120 sites are open at present, including the Dragon Palace, national areas of the Huangguoshu Waterfalls, the Golden Brocade Cave, the Maling River Valley , the Red Maple Lake, and the Shizhang Cave on the Chishui River. There are also many villages with characteristic ethnic minority customs and ways of life.

Major Attractions:

Huangguoshu Waterfalls: this is one of the largest waterfall groups in China, located 43 km southwest of Anshun of Guizhou Province. They are the largest waterfall groups in Asia as well! Turbulent waters hurl down into a pool at the bottom of a valley, sending foam up by 100 meters. The roar of the water can be heard kilometers away.

Shiqiao Miao Village: local people make paper from the bark of the mulberry tree here. This traditional method has been used for over one thousand years. People here also use different plants to make color paper.

Tunbao Cultural Village: this village is situated in the middle of Guizhou Province. According to historical records the ancestors of Tunbao People are soldiers who were stationed in Guizhou Province about 600 years ago in the Ming Dynasty. Even now, Tunbao People still live in forts and keep a peculiar army style. Stone foundations, stone walls, flagstone roofs, watchtowers, wall crenels and even dog holes upstairs characterize their buildings. Dixi, which they perform at festivals and celebrations, is the continuation of the ancient 'Martial Nuoxi' and is known as 'the living fossil of the ancient shows'.

Qingyan Ancient Town:
in the Ming Dynasty, this town was established, 29 km from Guiyang. As the historic and cultural town in this province there are 9 temples, 2 shrines, one palace and other well-preserved ancient constructions which demonstrate the brilliance of the ancient  architects. In 1995, this town was nominated as a national cultural relic.

Kaili Ethnic Minorities Museum:
this museum is a full introduction to human culture, geography, and the national minority customs of southeast Guizhou. The Minority Customs Hall and the Dragon Boat Hall are two exhibits worth catching.

Nanhua 'Long-Skirt' Miao village:
about 20 kilometers from Kaili, members of the Miao ethnic minority live in 'Diaojiaolou' (Miao style houses). They are very willing to share their unique heritage and culture with visitors.

Datang 'Short-Skirt' Miao village:
this village is located at the foot of Leigong Mountain. Before entering the village, you will be greeted by local villagers. The Datang Short-Skirt Miao are known for the women's elaborate silver headdresses.

  Shanbao Dong Village:
Found in the center of the Banyan tree scenic area and surrounded by more than 40 trees that are hundreds of years old. There are several hundred families in the village and most people are surnamed Yang. There is a strong singing tradition in this village.

Local Specialties:
Food: Qian (Guizhou) cuisine tastes numb and spicy, which are two indispensable elements in Guiyang food. 'Numb' refers to the condiment made from several spices largely refined from red pepper. Suan Tang Yu (Sour Soup Fish) is another typical Guiyang dish, originating from the Miao region.

Shopping: in Guiyang, Zhonghua Lu and Yan'an Lu are the popular shopping streets. Zhonghua lu is the most bustling commercial street in Guiyang and where you will find major department stores. Yan'an Lu is a perfect place to buy small goods where you will find a night market open until midnight. Crafts and local products such as Miao silver ornaments, wooden crafts, traditional Chinese medicines, ox horn products and unsophisticated totem masks are all available at Guiyang.
