Phenomenal Hunan

Hunan Province is historically significant, being a center of revolutionary activity. It was the birthplace of many Chinese Communist leaders, including Mao Zedong in particular. It is also a major rice-producing area and is a famous tourist attraction in the south of china. Hunan is well known for its unique tradition of ethnic majorities.

Reasons to visit: Hunan is a province of tourism and known as 'the wonder spot for touring'. There are 15 scenic areas and over 100 scenic sites here. Changsha, the provincial capital, is the most famous cultural city in Chinese history. There is also Dongting Lake, one of the five lakes to the south of Yangtze River. The strong customs of the ethnic minorities here are an indelible part of the landscape.

Maor attractions:

Dongting Lake: located in the northeastern of Hunan Province, Doting Lake is the second- largest freshwater lake in China. It is also called 'eight- hundred Li Dong Ting Lake'. Every year, the lake changes its appearance because of different seasons, and has long attracted many ancient poets and writers to describe its beauty. The weather of Dongting Lake is warm and moist and also changeable. Due to its fertile soil, perfect temperature, and plentiful rain, this lake is considered as the cradle of agriculture for the surrounding area.

Fenghuang Town: situated on the banks of the Tuo River, Fenghuang is famous for its splendid landscapes as known as 'a world of green'. Fenghuang originally meant 'the holy bird' in ancient times. It is one of China's most appealing towns and has with innumerable legends attached to it.

Zhangjaijie: a renowned tourist attraction, located in the west of Hunan Province. This is a national park well-noted for its exquisite forests, odd-shaped peaks and rocks, beautiful canyons, limestone caves and jaw-dropping panoramic views. It is said that 23 species of rare animals and more than 3,000 species of plants are living in the misty world. In addition, Zhangjiajie includes lots of famous tourist spots such as Baofeng Lake, the Huanglong Cave (Asia's largest cave), and many beautiful waterfalls and brooks. Furthermore, the ethnic minorities of Tujia, Bai and Miao also live here.

Yueyang Pavilion: this pavilion is also called Yueyang Lou and is famous for its unique designed architecture. The whole building is made of wood with just four pillars to support the entire structure. Over the centuries, lots of famous poems, politicians and writers left their mark or created masterpieces here.

Hengshan Mountain: Mt. Hengshan is considered one of the 'Eight Marvels' and is a must see for tourists. It is a holy spot for Buddhism and Taoism, and is also deemed one of China's five most distinguished mountains. On the top, the Shaolin Temple and the Watching Sunrise Platform are the best scenic spots. In addition to sacred temples, many other special areas can be found on Mt. Hengshan such as the Banshan Pavilion; the Magu Wonderland; the GaoTai Temple; the Martyry and the Jingang Dagoba.

Food: Hunan cuisine is considered one of the 'eight regional cuisines' of China, and is renowned for its distinctive spicy and chilly flavor. Similar to Sichuan, Hunan cuisine features the extensive use of chilli peppers, garlic and shallots which helps to cleanse the  palate and cool the body. Some prestigious dishes include Hong Shao Rou (Chairman Mao’s favorite, fatty pork, potatoes with spicy sauce), Kou wei xia (boiled shrimp topped with a chilli sauce)and Duo jiao yu tou (splayed and steamed fish head topped with a sauce of chopped red chillies).

Shopping: the most famous shopping area in Hunan Province is the Wuyi Square Shopping center in Changsha. All sorts of department stores, shopping malls and supermarkets, hotels, and recommended restaurants surround the bustling Square. Hand-embroidered craft items such as clothes, bags, wall hangings, handkerchiefs and other decorative items are popular souvenirs for travelers. The Chrysanthemum Stone is well-known in Hunan Province; artists carve the stones into different shapes resembling flowers, birds, animals and other artistic figures. These artworks come in sizes from small objects to huge screens and are sold as decorative ornaments.
